Ryan Reynolds has dropped major hints about Deadpool’s end in the MCU films, suggesting that he might not reprise the character again.
Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds, popularly remaining synonymous with the beloved superhero character of Deadpool, has been playing it dedicatedly for several years now. Ryan made his latest appearance as the Merc with Mouth in Shawn Levy’s blockbuster Marvel film Deadpool & Wolverine alongside Hugh Jackman. While Deadpool’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains uncertain, the actor has also hinted at the end of the Deadpool legacy.
Shortly after showing a bit of disinterest in reprising his character as Deadpool, Reynolds echoed similar sentiments in a different interview and this might disappoint a lot of fans.
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Ryan Reynolds shared that a fourth time feels a “little iterative and redundant” to him. Mentioning that he would love to pitch Deadpool and Wolverine together in the smartest way, the actor added, “Centering Deadpool works best if you take everything away from him and put his back against the wall. I can’t really do that again. A fourth time feels a little iterative and redundant. That doesn’t mean sacrificing fun. There is still an arc for Deadpool which is fulfilling and powerful.”
This isn’t just Deadpool saying ‘Oh, Hello’ to the MCU. It’s Deadpool – and Hugh, Shawn and me – saying farewell to a place and an era that literally made us. We are forever grateful to the fun, weird, uneven and risky world of 20th Century Fox. It was our origin story and we… pic.twitter.com/bvrp3cTote— Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds) July 27, 2024
Earlier during the Actors on Actors session with Andrew Garfield, Reynolds picked up on the future of his character in the MCU, stating, “It has been six years since the last film and it is a part of the reason which swallowed my whole life. You can’t take your hand off the stick through development, post-production, and marketing improvement. But then you kind of stop.”
Explaining that he wants to be more with his family, especially his kids, the actor added “I don’t ever want to be an absentee and I don’t ever want to miss stuff. I kind of die inside when I see their face and they have a competition or have a sports thing or something and I missed it.”
Deadpool As Future Avenger Or X-Man?
Elsewhere in the conversation with THR, Reynolds also spoke about future possibilities of Deadpool joining the Avengers or the X-Men. Although he believes that it is Deadpool’s “overarching wish” to be a part of a group, he doesn’t feel he should be in Avengers on X-Men.
“I think Deadpool works so well appearing with the X-Men and Avengers, but he always needs to stay an outsider. His coping mechanism of deflecting shame through humour works only when used to pave over his many inadequacies. If and when he does become an Avenger or X-Man, we’re at the end of his journey,” he concluded.
